Welcome to Ian Costello’s journey of discovering magic through design and illustration!
Along the way, he’s found joy in designing solutions for people, creating worlds, and illuminating ideas. With an approach that is equal parts structure, passionate intuition, and empathetic research, he realizes his imagination and critical thinking through a myriad of visual disciplines. He creates user interfaces, illustrations, and animated stories; all that kinda stuff (and more!) in hopes of helping others to see and feel a bit of fun and wonder.
Besides being a tenacious, starry-eyed artist, his time is otherwise occupied by an adventurous love for gaming and spending time in the kitchen, all while listening to a McElroy family podcast.
here are some samples of my work:
Covet’s complex, transportative instrumentals are illuminated in this redesign of the math rock trio’s album Effloresce. Illustrations of guitar-playing hands invite the listener into a mystical land beyond, complementing the peaceful escapism that is home to music. Expanding the original packaging, scanning an included mini-print enables a speculative AR feature for Spotify. Access to the tracklist appears through a thematic portal and tapping colorful islands provide song selection via this feature.
Collections through Augmented Reality Learning
The CARL mobile app is a speculative multi-designer effort to carry on the historical campus tours of the University of Florida. Designed on the premises of accessibility and engagement, CARL educates prospective students, members of the community, and any other curious Gator. Built around a kiosk-AR system, explorers can scan physical landmarks of the campus, unlocking an augmented reality component on their phone.
Survey the Array
Do you have any … typographers?
No? Iterate! Survey the Array playfully broaches the tremendous gap between commonly known design canon and the ineffably rich, true world of design using the format of Go Fish. Players will be enamored with a cascade of shape, color, and vector portraiture. A parallel semiotic system motivates opponents to decipher each others’ symbols and QR codes. Design novices and veterans alike are empowered to navigate through an extraordinary collection of designers.
